A unique and little known chapter in Chinese and Jewish history comes to life in this free exhibit. Between 1840 and 1949 three distinct streams of Jewish refugees sought, and found, sanctuary in China—among them were Sephardic merchants from Iraq, Russian Jews fleeing czarist pogroms and the Russian Revolution, and European Jews escaping Nazi persecution. In Shanghai, and other cities in which they settled, the refugees were welcomed by and live in harmony with their Chinese neighbors.
