| Bridge and Tunnel told, "Stay out of Castro!" | October 31, 2006
Organizers of the annual Castro Street Halloween celebration have issued a statement stating that, a) the party will be shut down at 11 pm, b) they are only going to have 1 entertainment stage, c) there will be a zero tolerance policy on alcohol (although haven't they been saying that for over 5 years?), and d) those that aren't from "the Castro area" are encouraged not to attend. Considering this debacle generally attracts 250,000 Bay Area young people, enforcing these new regulations could be tough. However, the question remains, why do people even want to go to this mega-crowded event in what is now obviously a bastion of intolerance?
Many of the Castro residents who are against "non-residents" attending the festivities have been persecuted themselves for many years, in case you didn't know. So why would they exclude a huge population? Is it because they have fabulous taste and many of the attendees wear jean shorts on the weekends? Or perhaps because many of these out-of-town attendees are completely unaware of the cultural significance of a place like the Castro? Or because many Castro residents are getting to the age that they don't want a loud party going on in their backyard on a week night? Or maybe it's because of the stabbings?
Whatever the reason, Castro residents have made their stand. Will this stop the "bridge and tunnel" from visiting the festival tonight? Doubtful, but we here at OvaHere implore the "b & t" to treat the Castro like they would treat their own neighborhood. We are just that compassionate (as evidenced by our "b & t" hiring policy - yes we have non-SF residents working for us).
